Where vessel design and operations come together
in Alaskan waters...
Research in the marine environment is a demanding endeavor where
work plans, budgets, and implementation must come together in tight
windows of activity. The vessel must be built to meet the challenges
and conditions of the marine environment. The captain and crew must
understand the mission and contribute to mission success. The quality
of the research and results depend upon it.
Understanding the needs
of the research community, Norseman Maritime
Charters has combined
years of experience with tested vessel design to deliver a research
support program that values quality research, safety, cost-effectiveness,
flexibility--- and mission success. Captains Paul Tate and Bart
Campbell have years of combined maritime experience sailing the
world’s oceans, with extensive experience in the
Bering Sea, North Pacific and Gulf of Alaska. They understand, and
have experienced the myriad details that contribute to a safe and
successful research voyage--- voyages where researchers, vessel and
crew work as team.
Our Captains operate two vessels designed to meet the demands of
at-sea research. Sister ships R/V Norseman and R/V
Norseman II were
both designed by noted naval architect Bruce Whittemore and built
by Marco Shipyard in Seattle. Originally designed to meet the extreme
demands of the winter crab fisheries of the North Pacific and Bering
Sea, both vessels have been expertly redesigned by Whittemore for
extended research and expedition charter. Their exceptional range,
rugged construction and sea keeping abilities were enhanced with
comfortable quarters, laboratory and lounge areas and ample deck
space for tenders and equipment.
With a range of at least
10,000 miles Norseman Maritime Charters’ vessels
can sail and work in any corner of the world's oceans. Yet their
agility and relatively shallow draft allow them to operate safely
in tight inshore passages and bays. Our vessels provide comfortable
and spacious research platforms that provide ample space for equipment,
computers, sample processing and relaxing after a long day of work.
Up to four small boats allow researchers to come and go from the
mother ship, knowing that a reliable base awaits their return. Additional
features include twelve ton extending cranes, equipment storage,
walk in freezers, high volume R/O water makers and 220 volt three
phase power.
Norseman
Maritime Charters is dedicated to the academic and research missions that expand
our knowledge of the marine environment. We are committed to expanding
the access of students, naturalists, scientists and the general
public to the world’s oceans. We understand
that vessel operating dollars compete with research dollars and we
strive to provide a safe, efficient, and cost-effective program to
accomplish your research goals.
Researchers from a variety of disciplines have come to rely on the
quality services provided by Norseman Maritime
Charters while working
in remote Alaska waters. We are pleased to have served a variety
of groups and agencies that include the Alaska SeaLife Center, Alaska
Department of Fish and Game, National Marine Fisheries Service, University
of Alaska, University of Washington and Cook Inlet Regional Citizen's
Advisory Council.
